The ultimate goal of Google is to satisfy its users by providing relevant images during a search inquiry. Then if users find the image they need, hopefully their experience is a positive one and repeat visits are more likely with Google in the future.

The following topics are discussed.

Image Searchers

First Peter discusses image searchers with the focus on why different users are searching, which is for Broad Exposure. Broad exposure discusses how Google provides a wide range of images originated from Google’s different properties i.e. maps. Unique Search Behavior is what a user may do when a deep search is done by next paging. Naval Use Cases refers to the reason searchers look for images such as for inspiration, ideas, shopping, research, medical inquiries or just for fun. Naval Use Cases also includes a visual dictionary perhaps for identifying words associated with another language.

How it works

The How it works portion of the presentation, Peter discusses how searched images work behind the website. Using Google’s toolbar, an html can be downloaded or copied and the information along with an image is discovered from other web pages. Images are then crawled, classified and indexed.  Crawled is when a user can press +1 button from any given webpage and a piece of image is shown giving the user a peek view. Then duplicates and referring pages are used allowing users a choice of links. Then images are ranked based on signals.  Best Practices
Best Practices are then discussed on what comes along with the searched images. In this section of the presentation, Google tries to focus on the user themselves by providing a wide range of possible images such as coloring pages, by host names or whatever draws their attention. Google also prides itself with other best practices including high quality images, above the fold and text descriptions to please its users.

Resources
Lastly, Peter rounds up the presentation with Google’s concentration on the where of its resources. The reliable resources Google uses are from Webmaster and web search help forums. Within the last 5 years, blogging has become a popular and uprising internet trend. Google uses an official blog section as well. Then the presentation is completed with a brief question and answer section where Peter answers a few most asked questions when users seek certain images using Google’s search engine.
