A webmaster from San Francisco, California posted a question with regards to title syntax: would he be better off using vertical pipes or horizontal dashes?

He was hoping to hear suggestions from Google and get some hard data on the matter, if any exist. Matt Cutts steps up to answer the query.

While this may seem like a trivial issue, it is definitely not out of place when it comes to Google. The company is known to defer to data when deciding which way to move forward, be it for something grand like a product launch or something more humble like a minor layout tweak. This is true even in matters of aesthetics. Google famously tested several shades of a certain color to find out which one would generate the best results.

As dedicated as the engineers are to data gathering, there doesn’t appear to be any on file concerning pipes versus dashes. Matt suggests conducting an A/B test to compare the two and see if there is any difference in the click-through rate. He says that Google will treat both equally but surmises that there may be a slight difference in user response.
